BIOGRAPHY

Jacques Mortier was born (10th July 1959), raised and received his precollege education in LavalMayenne (France). He obtained a MSc degree from the Université Rennes-IRennes, in 1983 (DEA, ranked #1/40, highest honors) and the chemical engineer title from the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes, the same year (# 3/37). Jacques Mortier did his military service in the French Navy in the Brest Arsenal, undertaking some scientific duties (Radiological Security Service, 1983-1984). He completed doctoral studies in mechanistic organic chemistry on the generation and reactivity of non-stabilized azomethine ylides in the group of Prof. Jack Hamelin and Dr. Marc Joucla, finishing with a thesis (Université Rennes-I, 1984-1987). After a postdoctoral position at Northwestern UniversityEvanston (Chicago), Illinois, with Prof. Anthony G. M. Barrett (1987-1988), he was appointed for six years as a Senior Scientist at Rhône-Poulenc Secteur Agro, La Dargoire Agrochemical Research Centre, nowadays Bayer CropScience, Lyon, France, and at Rhône-Poulenc Agriculture Limited, Ongar, England. He then moved back to the Université Rennes-I where he got a position of Assistant Professor (Maître de conférences, 1994). He obtained his “Habilitation à diriger des recherches” in Rennes in 1995 and was nominated junior member of the “Institut Universitaire de France” (University Institute of France – IUF) in 1998 and auditor at the Institut des Hautes Études de l’Entreprise (Paris, 2002). In 1999, he was promoted Professor of Organic Chemistry in Le Mans Université. Jacques Mortier has supervised the work of 11 PhD and 19 MSc students which was published in ≈ 100 scientific papers, reports and patents in the areas of organic methodology and mechanistic studiesdirected metalation chemistrysynthesis of proapoptotic gossypol analogs, nano structured organometallic architectures, nitrenium ions, molecular borophosphonates, heterocyclic chemistry, boron and phosphorus chemistry, acetylene chemistry, radiolabelled synthesis, selective/asymmetric synthesis, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions, agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, etc.

He recently edited a book: Arene Chemistry: Reaction Mechanisms and Methods for Aromatic Compounds (John Wiley & Sons, 2016, 992 pages, 32 chapters).

Extensive experience in assisting chemical, agrochemical scientists and civil engineers in solution of synthetic programs through consultancy work. Co-inventor of patents in very diverse technical fields (pesticides, synthesis of anticancer reagents, chemical processes…). 5 consultantships.
